Problem Free Period

Problem Free Periods

The reason for this blog is to give you all some insight into the possibility that having problem free periods is possible, but it is also normal.

One of the many reasons that I see young women in clinic is for the support around period problems.

The main problems that are most common include:

  • Irregular periods or no periods at all

  • Painful periods

  • PMS

  • Polycystic Ovaries

  • Endometriosis

  • And other hormonal symptoms like acne, headaches and low libido.

What really makes me sad is that so many girls are given the oral contraceptive pill to manage these symptoms. Girls as young as 13 are being prescribed the pill for irregular and painful periods as well as acne. Girls this is not the answer! You may get a regular bleed with the pill but I want you to know that a bleed on the pill is not your body having a period it is simply a withdrawal bleed from the stopping of the artificial hormones when you take the sugar pill.

When you take the oral contraceptive pill and other methods you are basically shutting down your hormonal production. The pill switches off your own hormones and you are replaced with synthetic hormones that mimic your own estrogens and progesterone (more of this in another blog).

Today I want to talk to you about pre menstrual syndrome. This is amongst the most common complaint that I see in clinic and it affects 70-90% of women during their menstruating years. Symptoms vary greatly between women mainly due to the different hormonal patterns that each women may present with.

Typically these symptoms occur after ovulation and peak 4-7 days prior to your period. This is often due to a lowering of progesterone at this point. Women can become irritable, anxious and have varying mood swings. They can experience cravings, headaches, poor sleep, painful breasts, fluid retention and fatigue. PMS is commonly seen as a trivial health issue and is often treated with the oral contraceptive pill, antidepressants and over the counter pain relief that may have significant side effects.

From a more natural perspective, PMS is viewed as an imbalance with a woman's hormones that can be corrected. Addressing underlying causes can significantly enhance overall health and a sense of wellbeing. Managing some of the risk factors that are known to contribute to PMS is something that every woman needs to do:

  • Stress plays a big role in all period problems

  • Low levels of exercise and sedentary jobs increase your risk

  • High sugar diets and cows dairy increase inflammation and contribute to pain, heavy periods and acne. Alcohol and caffeine also contribute.

  • Its' important to address mineral and essential fatty acid deficiencies.

The healthier your diet and lifestyle are, the better your periods will be. Specific herbal and nutritional prescription can greatly improve all hormonal issues related to your cycle. You don't have to suffer!!

A period that just arrives with no irritability, no headaches, no food cravings and no pain... is possible!
