Auto Immune conditions! Could you Be at Risk?

In the clinic we have seen an increase in the amount of people presenting with autoimmune conditions. Coeliac disease, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis are just some of the more common conditions that we see in clinic. As you can see, autoimmune conditions vary considerably depending on the tissues which as affected.

What is an autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune disease occurs when a normal part of the body is attacked by an abnormal immune reaction. The cause of autoimmune conditions is generally unknown. Some diseases, such as lupus, can run in families and certain cases may be triggered by infections or other environmental factors.

Regardless of whether or not the cause is know, there is a common thread that is shared by every autoimmune condition: an inflammatory immune response.

The treatment of autoimmune diseases vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or immunosuppressants may be used to improve to the symptoms. However, this approach doesn't address why the inflammation is present in the first place.

As a naturopath I look holistically at what could possibly be triggering this inflammatory process: could it be possible hidden infections, food allergies or sensitivities? Perhaps it may be stress, nutritional deficiencies or leaky gut? It could even be a combination of these that will need to be addressed in order to reduce the inflammation and begin to heal the body.  For those seeking help in managing their conditions, it may require some detective work, trial and error, and patience, but the results we can achieve together are worth it.
