Herbal Remedies For Sleep

Quite often in clinic our practitioners come across people who have had difficulty falling to sleep, staying asleep or a combination of both, leaving them waking in the morning still feeling tired and starting their day on the back foot.

Sleep is imperative to overall health and improving the quality of sleep is one of our primary focus points in our naturopathic treatment plans.

A lot of our clients have tried pharmaceutical sleeping aids in the past, and have found that they still tend to wake feeling groggy and far from refreshed.

Whilst naturopathically we look at the drivers of disturbed sleep, ie: stress, anxiety, toxicity, inflammation, in order to achieve long-lasting benefits of improved stress and wellbeing. There are cases in which we focus on treating sleep disorders directly to provide relief and increased energy that comes from a proper night sleep.

We often use a herbal formula to achieve this, and whilst the aim of the formula varies for each individual, the formula typically allows people to fall asleep easier, makes them less likely to wake during the night (or reduces the frequency of waking) and allows the body to fall into a better circadian rhythm so they receive a better quality sleep. The main difference between a herbal sleep formula and pharmaceutical agent is that people will typically wake feeling more refreshed the morning after taking the herbal formula and less likely to experience the groggy sensation that is common when using pharmaceutical sleeping agents.

Each herbal formula we prescribe is individually formulated on the specific needs of the individual. For example, a person who struggles to fall asleep at night would be different compared to someone who constantly wakes during the night.

Some herbs we use in our herbal sleep formulas include:

  • Chamomile - This is one of the most effective herbs for assisting sleep. It is a gentle calmative herb which acts on the nervous system to calm the mind and body down, and reduce restlessness.

  • Passionflower - This herb is indicated for sleep disorders. It is beneficial by reducing restlessness and it is one of the go-to herbs for insomnia. It enables a person to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep for longer. If a person is still likely to wake during the night, they find it easier to fall back asleep again.

  • Zizyphus - This is another herb that is good for insomnia, particularly those who have difficulty with sleep onset, as it had a mild sedative action. It is also a relaxant and quite nutritive, so many people find they wake feeling more refreshed in the morning.

If you're having sleeping problems, contact the clinic to see one of our practitioners. It's never too late to break bad sleeping habits - and you really will benefit from doing so!
