Position Statement on Australian Supplements

Many of you may have seen the episode of 4 Corners last night on the FDA and regulation of the vitamin industry.

The FDA is the American Food and Drug Association responsible for regulating drugs, supplements and food. The Australian equivalent is the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA).

4 Corners last night were referring to the vitamin industry in America and the subsequent lack of control by the FDA. I want to reassure you that the TGA is extremely hard lined on the area of supplements and vitamins. Our industry is heavily regulated and monitored to ensure that the quality of vitamins and supplements supplied in Australia is at a very high standard.

All supplements that I prescribe are practitioner only, which means you cannot purchase them over the counter, a script is required and they are highly regulated.

Here are three tips to ensure that the supplements you are taking are safe;

  1. Never buy on the internet unless you know the product is manufactured in Australia.

  2. Please don't self prescribe. It is important to have professional advice around all supplements.

  3. If you are unsure, don't take any supplement, please seek professional advice.
