Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is considered a functional gastrointestinal condition that according to medical terms has unknown causative factors. Diagnosis is generally made after all other possible gastrointestinal problems have been ruled out, with standard clinical tests and pathology. Your doctor will generally tell you that there is no known test to diagnose IBS and that your diagnosis is based on exclusion from other gut pathology and the specific symptoms that you present with.


IBS is usually described in a patient as:


  • C-IBS  Constipation Dominant

  • D-IBS  Diarrhorea Predominant

  • A-IBS  Alternating between constipation and diarrhorea.         


Common Signs and Symptoms Of IBS:


  • Abdominal pain and cramping.

  • Diarrhorea or Constipation or a combination of both.

  • Abdominal bloating of a feeling of abdominal distension.

  • Excessive flatulence.

  • Urgency

  • Feeling of not emptying your bowel completely.

  • Nausea.

  • There may mucous in the stool.


Unlike other inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohns or ulcerative colitis, your doctor will tell your that there is nothing you can do for IBS  and that you will need to learn to live with it or try the FODMAPS diet, which may or may not help.
