Diarrhoea is the frequent passage of loose, watery stools; generally the result of increased motility in the colon.

It is a symptom of an underlying condition and acute diarrhoea is usually self-limiting (2-3 days). Chronic diarrhoea (2-3 weeks or more in duration) however, requires appropriate assessment and management. It is important in these cases to attempt to determine the cause(s).

These causes may include:

  • Microbial infection

  • Recent antibiotic use

  • Nervous anxiety and/or other emotional disturbances

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Food allergies and/or sensitivities

How can NDH help?

If necessary, our practitioners can organise a referral to the appropriate medical practitioner to determine the underlying cause of the diarrhoea – especially if it is chronic or presenting with signs of infection (such as being accompanied by a fever).

We may be able to provide assistance and support in determining the triggers for diarrhoea, especially if there is any nervous system involvement or food sensitivities/intolerances.

Our practitioners may be able to prescribe herbal or nutritional supplementation to reduce the inflammation and irritation along the bowel wall, slowing the bowel’s transit time and allowing it to heal. They may also be able to provide support and care in restoring the microbiome by prescribing specific blends of probiotic strains based on individual assessment and need.
